As the vessels are
loaded automatic sampling devices take random samples from the cargo stream for analysis
by a third party. The third party analysis is performed by the Minerals Engineering Centre
laboratories at Dalhousie University in Halifax. Customarily tests are made for heat
value, moisture content, particle size, and pellet size distribution. The analysis of the
ash documents its chemical composition as well as the melting characteristics.
